The 1976 New York City Marathon, the first run through the streets of all five boroughs, transformed a sport eccentricity into a celebration of the city. Originally intended as an affirmation of the viability of New York City after the city came close to bankruptcy in 1975, the five-borough marathon would initiate dramatic new interest in the 26.2-mile event by establishing the marathon as a festival of urban identity and personal accomplishment. 

The origins of the New York City Marathon go back to 1936, when Robert Douglas, William Culbreath, and Joseph J. Yancey began the New York Pioneer Club "on the sidewalks of New York" as a track club for Harlemites who had neither the funds nor the talent to join one of the city's competitive teams. The Pioneers accepted all who wanted to join, a policy continued by the Road Runners Club of America when it was founded in 1958, and by the New York Road Runners. The marathon boom that began in the 1970s, which will bring about 60,000 runners to the streets of New York City on November 1, 2026, can be traced back to the Pioneer Club's inclusive, democratic approach to athletics.
